A.             INFORMATIONAL ITEMS:  The following items are for information only and do not require Board action. 

1.         2015 Summer Cyclic Status Report (Dr. Foster) 

            In an effort to keep the Board current on the status of summer cyclic completed projects. 

 

2.         Curb Appeal Landscape Plans (Dr. Foster) 

            The Board requested the landscape plans for the following schools:  Chukker Creek Elementary, Byrd Elementary and Midland Valley High. 

 

3.         Legislative Update (Mr. Liner) - No update this meeting.

 

B.             CONSENT ITEMS:  The following items will be voted on as a group.  Individual items may be discussed prior to a vote being taken. 

 1.         Submission of the Education and Economic Development Act (EEDA) Preparing College and Career-Ready Graduates Grant (Mr. Laurence) 

            The General Assembly has provided funding to the State Department of Education to provide the EEDA Preparing College- and Career-Ready Graduates competitive grant opportunity to help districts and schools implement strategies specifically designed to address the academic and career development needs of students with proven academic deficiencies.  A cohort of 90 eighth grade students from Aiken Middle, Busbee-Corbett Middle School, and Ridge Spring-Monetta Middle School will participate in a three-year program that focuses on academic and career development and success.  Students from these schools will be selected to participate in this program based on academic, attendance, and behavioral data.  Funds from Year One in the amount of $75,000, $150,000 for Year Two, and $150,000 for Year Three will be used to focus on moving the cohort closer to graduation and exposing them to career opportunitities.  A Career Development Facilitator (CDF), two summer intersession periods, academic tutoring, and intensive reading remediation are the key funded elements of the project. 

 

 2.         Request for Approval for Home Instruction (Dr. Hewett) 

            The School Board, according to the Code of Laws of South Carolina, Section 959-65-40, is authorized to approve home schooling for parents not opting for approval by the South Carolina Association of Independent Home Schools.  The program has to meet certain standards as outlined in the bill, Policy IEK and IEK-R. 

 

 3.         Dollar General Literacy Foundation Youth Literacy Grant to Mossy Creek Elementary School – FY16 (Mr. Laurence) 

            Mossy Creek Elementary School was given a $3,000 Youth Literacy Grant from Dollar General Literacy Foundation.  The funds from this grant will be used to purchase leveled readers for ESOL students. 

 

4.         South Carolina Department of Education’s National School Lunch Equipment Assistance Grant for Leavelle McCampbell Middle School – FY16 (Mr. Laurence) 

             Leavelle McCampbell Middle School was awarded a $7,036.68 National School Lunch Equipment Assistance Grant from the South Carolina Department of Education.  The funds from this grant will be used to purchase a three-door, reach-in-freezer for the cafeteria. 

 

5.         Change Order Number 1 for the HVAC Renovation Project at Aiken Elementary (Dr. Foster) 

            Change Order Number 1 for the HVAC Renovation Project at Aiken Elementary in the credit amount of $40,291.68. 

 

6.         Change Order Number 1 for the HVAC Renovation Project at North Augusta Elementary (Dr. Foster) 

            Change Order Number 1 for the HVAC Renovation Project at North Augusta Elementary in the credit amount of $25,743.39. 

 

7.         Proposed 2016-2017 Budget Calendar (Mr. Traxler) 

            Board Policy DBG requires that the Aiken County Board of Education adopt a budget calendar by November 1 each year.

            The certified and classified personnel presented have been screened by the Personnel Services Department and interviewed and approved by the Principal and Academic Officers.
